We wanted to give you an idea of what we have available in our farm store. Below are descriptions of the kinds of products we offer. If you have more specific questions, e-mail or call us (our info is at the left).
A Word About Our Suppliers
We get most of our products from companies who work with Peruvians to produce fair trade products. Classic Alpaca and Peruvian Link supply most of our socks, scarves, mittens, etc.
We are getting more and more products from the Natural Fiber Producers, an alpaca cooperative that makes all of their products in the United States from North American alpacas. So far, we have socks, hats, gloves, yarn, and rugs made to their high standards of quality and uniformity.
The New England Fiber Pool is another US vendor. We send fiber to them and are able to purchase products made in the US from US alpaca fiber.
We have yarns and roving made from our animals' fleece as well as from other farms in our area. The ones we currently have available were processed in a small mill in Maxwell, IA.
We have purses our daughter, Karly brought back from Peru as well as some from Classic Alpaca. Cell phone carriers and tablet cases with Peruvian designs are also available.
We have throw-sized blankets made from either 100% alpaca or alpaca-wool blend. Bed sized blankets (fit up to a queen sized bed) woven in Ecuador of alpaca acrylic blend are available through Choice Alpaca products.. The Natural Fiber Producers have a natural-colored woven baby blanket as well as alpaca duvets.
We have gloves, glittens, and mittens in all colors, styles, and lengths.
We have gloves, glittens and mittens for kids. The Natural Fiber Producer's mittens are available in bright colors and made to their high standards of quality and uniformity in the United States. Driving gloves with leather palms, fingerless, gloves and liner gloves are from NEAFP, Classic Alpaca and Choice Alpaca.
Hand knit thrummed mittens, felted mittens and cable mittens are made by us and local artisans.
Our variety of hats has something for everyone. Our Classic Alpaca Chullos (ear-flap hats) have the warmth of alpaca with a layer of synthetic fleece for those of you prone to itching. If you value all-natural clothing, the NFP makes hats only from alpaca and a small amount of wool. We have hats for kids and babies as well as adults (even adults with a goofy streak).
Come check out the newest thing in winter fashion: a scarf and hat in one! We also have the two-in-one hat from Peruvian Link: it can be worn as a hat or a stylish cowl.
Whether you are looking for something to keep you warm or something to keep you stylish, we have scarves and shawls for you. Most are made from 100% baby alpaca! Check out our fair isle "gators"-- fleece-lined neck warmers that are less hassle than a scarf.
Alpaca breeders used to throw a lot of fiber away. Anything deemed "too coarse" was used for mulch if it was used for anything at all. Now, thanks to the Natural Fiber Producers and their Certified Sorted TM system, that fleece is sent to Ingrid's Handwoven Rugs in Texas.
Now you can buy a beautiful, unique rug made from the fleece of our alpacas. The rugs range in sizes from the 13"x17" "Tush Cush" (perfect for football games) to 2'x8' runners to large area rugs.
Boy, do we have socks! All are made with alpaca, which will keep your feet warm but not sweaty. Sock styles range from thick boot socks to thinner dress socks. We have socks with grippers on the bottom, socks with arch support, socks with low cuffs, and even knee socks! Classic Alpaca's Thera Socks are great for people with poor circulation or those of us who just hate tight socks. One customer said the thick soles on the Thera Socks are perfect for his arthritic feet.
All styles come in a variety of colors, and range in sizes from small to extra large. We are happy to order in any size, style or color, provided the wholesaler has them in stock.
New to the Natural Fibers Producers and to our Farm Store are Alpaca Boot Liners. These felted alpaca fiber inserts can be cut to fit any size shoe or boot and will keep your feet warm, dry and toasty when your alpaca socks are in the wash.
As a rule, we don't stock many sweaters; alpaca sweaters are often very costly, so it's a huge investment that may not move. That said, we do place special orders for sweaters for customers.
From Classic Alpaca, we have alpaca, chicken, duck, and teddy bear toys made of alpaca skin. They assure us they are from animals who died of natural causes. If that isn't your taste, we have alpaca hand puppets, knit finger puppets, stuffed alpacas in their own chullos, and dolls from Peru.
We currently have NFP To Go Boxes, so you can get to know the highest quality alpaca yarn on the market. These little Chinese food boxes have everything you need: the pattern, needles, buttons, stitch markers, and even the yarn wound into center-draw cakes so you can get to it as soon as possible.
We also have zippered kit bags with all you need to make thrummed mittens, a beret or lacy scarf, the last two items made from our new line of Smart Suri yarns- 90% Suri Alpaca and 10% Merino wool. Each bag is one of a kind made here at Magic Willows. Pick your bag, yarn and stitch markers for whichever free pattern you choose. Or purchase a ready made kit.
Whether you're a start-to-finish spinner/knitter or just an adventurous crafter, give Suri a try. The brilliant luster of suri makes dye sing, and the tight locks make an intriguing addition to baskets and other weaving. One customer is using some of Ruthie Lou's neck fleece for Santa beards!
We have roving made from our animals, processed by C&M Acres in Maxwell, IA. We have 100% suri as well as suri/merino (wool) blend in beautiful browns.
Roving from the Natural Fiber Producers is a blend of huacaya and suri, bringing the best of both to your spinning. Made from the "Hairy-but-Nice" category of alpaca fleece, this roving is made specifically for hand spinners. Roving comes in white, browns, and greys.
Calling knitters, crocheters, and weavers! Get to know alpaca!
We have Smart Suri yarn- 90% Suri/10% Merino to give it that little bit of memory and versatility. Currently, we have white, fawn and a heathery fawn. All are dyeable.
We also have 100% suri yarn made from our animals' fiber in lace, fingering, sport, sock and bulky weights. This yarn is a dyer's dream! We still have some that we dyed available.
From the Natural Fiber Producers, we have a wide variety of yarns, ranging from fingering to bulky weight. These yarns are made with huacaya, suri, and 5% or less wool. With this blend, you get the loft of huacayas, the luster and drape of suri, and the memory of wool. The yarn is produced entirely in the United States, and is specifically designed to not shed or fall apart, as some lower-quality alpaca yarn tends to do.
We've just recently added Suri/ Silk yarn from the NFP as well as a cotton/ alpaca/ wool blend in a nice variety of colors.
